Scope and Contents
Less than a quarter of a linear foot of documents donated by John Phillips. The documents include a memoir of Phillips service in Vietnam with River Division 593 from November 1969 to June 1970 and a copy of his medical record dated 2001.
Biographical / Historical
Born in 1949 in Aransas Pass, Texas, John Phillips volunteered for the United States Navy in 1968 and served for four (4) years. After training, he was first assigned to the USS Ranger (CVA 61) and later to the 593rd River Division as a Seaman (later promoted to 3rd Class Petty Officer). He saw combat while participating in over two hundred (200) missions in Cambodia and Vietnam. John Phillips earned multiple medals, ribbons and commendations before being discharged in 1972 with the rank of E5. After Vietnam, he returned to NM State University and earned a degree in Agriculture in 1976. He is a member of Gamewardens and the PBR (River Patrol Boat) Association.
