Scope and Contents
Approximately a quarter of a linear foot of manuscript material donated by C. Harmon Reed, Jr, who served with the 299th Engineer Battalion at Pleiku from 1967 to 1968. The collection consists of Reed's letters home to his parents (some include captions for photos he sent home; not donated) with clippings, military orders and medal citation.
Biographical / Historical
Born in Martinsville, Virginia in 1943, C. Harmon Reed volunteered for the United States Army Corps of Engineers through the ROTC program of Clemson University. He served for three (3) years. After training, he was assigned to the 299th Engineers (CBT), C Company and was stationed at Pleiku and later Dak To, Vietnam. He later served at Ben Het, Vietnam until 1968. He earned multiple medals, ribbons and commendations including the Bronze Star before being discharged in 1969 as a 2nd Lt. After Vietnam, C. Harmon Austin worked in the field of architecture.
