Scope and Contents
Approximately one and a half linear feet of research material gathered by Colonel Douglas E. Moore, USA (Ret.) concerning the recommendation for the posthumous award of the Congressional Medal of Honor to Staff Sergeant Harold G. Bennett and the award of the Silver Star and Bronze Star to Specialist Four Charles Craft for their exploits at the Battle of Binh Gia in December 1964 and their subsequent conduct as POWs following the battle. Bennett was executed by the Viet Cong in 1965, while Crafts was released in 1967.Biographical / Historical
Douglas E. Moore was born September 21, 1936. He volunteered for the United States Army Medical Service Corps 1959. Moore served the Army for thirty years two of which in the Republic of Vietnam. While in Vietnam Moore served as a Dust-off Pilot attached for the 57th Medical detachment (1964 to 1965) as Captain (pay grade O-3) and a Pilot and Commander for the 159th Medical detachment (1968 to 1969) as a Major (O-4). During his tour he was involved with the recovery of Prisoners of War, and Agent Orange Spray missions. For his service in Vietnam Moore received the Purple Heart, Air Medal with 32 Oak Leafs, the Distinguished Flying Cross, and the Distinguished Flying Cross with Oak Leafs. Douglas M.
