Scope and Contents
The collection consists of approximately 2.25 linear feet of articles and clippings, pamphlets, periodicals, newspapers, books, films, LPs, Vietnamese grammar manuals, and Vietnamese publications accumulated by Neil Olsen. The materials document a variety of topics including Communist propaganda, anti-war activities, and post-war Vietnam. The materials date predominately from 1960 to 2005.
Biographical / Historical
Neil H. Olsen was born in Glendale, California in 1946 and was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1967. He served with the 4th Infantry Division in western Pleiku province from August to October 1967 and was TDY to MACV Advisory Team 38 in Lam Dong province from November 1967 to August 1968. He participated in the 'Francis Marion Operation' in II Corps and was awarded the CIB, RVN 2nd Class Honor Medal, Vietnam Service, and Vietnam Campaign. Mr. Olsen was discharged from the U.S. Army in 1969 as the rank of Sergeant. He returned to school and subsequently earned a Ph.D. in linguistics from the University of Utah in 2014. His dissertation topic was 'A descriptive grammar of Koho: a Mon-Khmer language'.
