More than 70 field manuals and technical manuals printed between the years 1956 to 1985.

The collection also contains approximately 1.5 linear feet of materials documenting the history of the 174th Assault Helicopter Company in Vietnam accumulated by Jim McDaniel from various unit members including Fred Thompson. The materials include scrapbooks; notes; photographs; slides; maps and diagrams; casualty lists; images and sketches; memorial service programs; articles/clippings; press releases; correspondence; letters of appreciation; journals; unit histories; military orders; movement orders; award citations; mailing lists/directories; rosters; personal recollections; Lam Son 719 by Major General Nguyen Duy Hinh; a history of The High Priced Help; yearbook photocopies; operational reports-lessons learned; newsletters; South Vietnam Tactical Aerodrome Directory; daily staff journals; flight records; records re: effort to add Gary Markle to the Vietnam Memorial Wall; website printouts; and ephemera. The materials are dated predominately 1965-1971 and 1987-2009.
Biographical / Historical
James Iley McDaniel served in the United Stated Army from 1966 to 1990 and had two tours of duty in Vietnam. He was a Warrant Officer during his first tour of duty in Vietnam with the 174th Assault Helicopter Company in Duc Pho in 1967 to 1968 and served as a UH-1C and UH-1D pilot with the call sign Shark Four. He served his second tour of duty in Vietnam with the rank of Captain with the 116th Assault Helicopter Company in Chu Lai in 1971 and was a UH-1H pilot with the call sign Hornet Two Zero.
