Scope and Contents

Approximately two and a half linear feet of artifacts from Steve Sullivan's tour in Vietnam from 1967-1968 where he flew UH1-C gunships with the 57th Assault Helicopter Company in Kom Tum. The collection contains a flight suit, fatigue pants, four patches, military issue towel, compass case, sunglasses, decorated helicopter flight helmet and carrying bag, an MB-4A Computer Air Navigation tool and plasticized DOD evasion chart of Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam. The collection also contains a US Army pack sack, black hammock, black shirt, and canteen with a bullet hole, which were taken from North Vietnamese soldiers who attacked the base while Sullivan was there.

Biographical / Historical

Stephen Remick Sullivan was born in Missoula, Montana in 1943. He volunteered after graduation from the Montana State College Reserve Officers' Training Corps (R. O.T. C.) as a second lieutenant( pay grade O-1) for the United States Army Corp of Engineers in 1965. Sullivan served five years active duty and ten years in the Army Reserves. He served one year (1967 to 1968) at Kon Tum, Republic of Vietnam with the 57th Assault Helicopter Company , out of Fort Bragg, North Carolina, first as Section Leader, then as Armed Helicopter Platoon Commander. For his service in Vietnam he received the Silver Star and Air Medal with 38 Oak Leaf clusters. Sullivan was released from Active Duty as a Captain (pay grade O-3) on October 1970.
