Scope and Contents
Less than a quarter of a linear foot of documents donated by Richard Fulton. Included are press releases and supporting documents covering a battle for patrol base Diamond III and patrol base Frontier city, photocopies of photos of Trang Sup Special Forces Camp in the fall of 1968, and stories written by Fulton recounting his experiences during his service as a writer for the 7th Air Force Directorate of Information Combat News Branch housed at Tan Son Nhut Air Base from October 1, 1967 to September 1, 1969. Also included in the collection is a painting by Fulton depicting an AC-47 gunship dropping flares and firing its weapons.
Biographical / Historical
Born in 1944 in Decatur, Illinois, Richard Fulton volunteered for the United States Air Force in 1962 and served for seven (7) years. After training, he was assigned to the 7th Air Force Directorate of Information, Combat News Branch, where he served as a Military Journalist. While serving as a combat news staff writer, he wrote daily summaries of the air war while being stationed at Tan Son Nhut Air Base and holding the rank of E4. Richard Fulton saw combat during the Tet Offensive and earned multiple medals, ribbons, and commendations including the Bronze Star before being discharged in 1969 as an E5. After Vietnam, Richard Fulton returned to college and earned a degree in history. He is a Life member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
