Scope and Contents
The collection consists of approximately half a linear foot of slides and documents donated to the archive by Charles N. Coleman. The slides were taken by Coleman during his service with the U.S. Army Engineer Construction Agency Vietnam (USAECAV) Provisional at Long Binh from June 1, 1969 through August 14, 1970. The slides show daily life in Long Binh, and they also reflect Coleman’s travels to Nha Trang, Qui Nhon, An Khe, Phu Bai, Dong Ha North, and Pleiku.The collection also includes approximately one linear foot of books and military publications accumulated by Charles Coleman. The publications include Air Power and the Fight for Khe Sanh, Counterinsurgency Operations (FMFM 8-2), and Vietnam 10 Years Later: What Have We Learned? The materials are dated 1973-1990.
Biographical / Historical
Charles N. Coleman was born November 27, 1946 in Brooklyn, New York. He graduated from the University of Maryland in June 1968 and volunteered for Army OCS (Officer Candidate School) shortly afterward. He went to basic training at Fort Dix, and Combat Engineering Advanced Individual Training at Fort Leonard Wood. He was sent to Vietnam on June 1, 1969 and became a clerk for the U.S. Army Engineer Construction Agency Vietnam (USAECAV) Provisional in Long Binh. Four months into his tour, he became a courier and traveled all over Vietnam. He ended his tour working as the Engineer representative at the 90th Replacement Battalion. He finished his service in Vietnam on August 14, 1970. In 1974 he used the GI Bill to get his M.A. in Public Administration, and eventually got his Ph.D. in Public Administration from the University of Pittsburgh. He served in the Army Reserves and left the service as a Staff Sergeant. Dr. Coleman taught at the University of New Haven.- 1
