Scope and Contents

Less than a quarter of a linear foot of slides, photographs, and documents donated to the archive by William "Bill" James. The slides were taken by James during his service in Vietnam from October 1962 through July 1963 and depict military life, city scenes, and aerial landscapes.

The documents are a copy of James' military record documenting his career, training, awards, and flight logs. The collection also contains 1 photograph, 5 negatives and 276 slides from his 1962-1963 service in country.

Biographical / Historical

Born in 1938 in Macon, Georgia, William James volunteered for the United States Army, was commissioned in 1960 and served for four (4) years. He held the rank of 2nd Lt. in the US Army Transportation Division. During his service in Southeast Asia he had an MOS of Helicopter Pilot while being stationed at Bien Hoa, Vietnam. During his service in Vietnam, William James earned multiple medals, ribbons and commendations including the US Army Air Medal with four oak clusters. William James was discharged in 1964 as a 1st Lt. and after the military he owned a truck salvage business. He is a member of the Vietnam Helicopter Pilots Association.
