Scope and Contents
The collection consists of Robert J. Uplinger's passport issued by the American Embassy in South Vietnam and Uplinger's recollections of his two tours of service in South Vietnam (1968-1969 and 1971-1972). The passport is dated January 25, 1968 while the recollections are dated ca. 2017.
Biographical / Historical
Lieutenant Colonel Robert J. Uplinger, Jr. was born in Syracuse, NY in 1943. He was commissioned through the University of Kansas ROTC in February 1965 and entered active duty in the U.S. Army at Fort Benjamin Harrison, IN the following month. He was posted with Taegu District Command in Taegu, Korea from 1965 to 1966 before serving two tours in Vietnam. During his first tour between 1967 and 1968, Uplinger served with 1st Logistical Command Saigon, Task Force Oregon, and the Americal Division at Chu Lai. His second tour came during 1970-1971 and was spent with HQ US Army Vietnam at Long Binh. A graduate of the US Army Command and General Staff College (1974), Uplinger received multiple awards for his service including the Bronze Star, the Military Order of the Purple Heart, and the Vietnam Gallantry Cross.
