Scope and Contents

The collection consists of approximately 8 linear feet of materials accumulated by Tom Marshall including documents, a poster, maps, artifacts, moving images, audio, film order catalogs, flyers, notes, film time coding sheets, periodicals, photographs, newsletters, a book, slides, photographs, correspondence, and electronic media. The materials include records pertaining to his military service, including his deployment as a helicopter pilot in Vietnam from 1970-1971; records pertaining to the research and publishing of his book, The Price of Exit (as well as the production of the accompanying film The Price of Exit: Anthology); drafts of his other writings including his planned second book Woodstock One-Three; letters written to his wife from Vietnam; and records pertaining to Marshall's activities with the Vietnam Helicopter Pilots Association including his involvement in getting a monument dedicated to the VHPA installed at Arlington National Cemetery (including a replica of the monument). Other topics covered by the materials include the Battle of Fire Support Base Ripcord, LZ Lolo, Lam Son 719, and Charlie Horse. The materials are dated predominately 1966-1977 and 1986-2018.

Biographical / Historical

Chief Warrant Officer William Thomas (Tom) Marshall, Jr. served as a helicopter pilot with the 1st Brigade, 4th Infantry Division in An Khe, Central Highlands of Vietnam from August 18 - November 17, 1970. Later, he was stationed with Company C and the 163rd Aviation Company, (General Support), 101st Airborne Division at Camp Eagle, Vietnam from November 18, 1970 - August 18, 1971. By the end of his time in Vietnam, Tom had received the Bronze Star for meritorious service and accumulated 1,087 hours of combat flying time. After the war, Tom became an active member of the Vietnam Helicopter Pilots Association, where he frequently gave presentations on his time in Vietnam. In 1998, Tom wrote, The Price of Exit, detailing his experience in Vietnam.
