Biographical / Historical
Lieutenant Colonel James L. Dickey served as the S-4 (Logistical Officer) for Company B, 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne), which was responsible for the Special Forces effort throughout II Corps. The Company was responsible for advising their Vietnamese Special Forces counterparts in all aspects of the counterinsurgency in II Corps and for recruiting, training, equipping, and operations of some 16,000 Civilian Indigenous Defense Group (CIDG) troops located in some 27 remote Special Forces Camps throughout II Corps.

LTC Dickey was responsible for programming, procurement, storage, and delivery of all classes of supply in support of the Special Forces effort. During the battle of Ben Het which occured during the Spring and early Summer of 1969, LTC Dickey assured that the besieged Camp and relief forces were constantly and continually resupplied. His efforts played a large role in the successful repulsion of two North Vietnamese Army Regiments.
