Biographical / Historical
2nd Lieutenant Roger Gash completed ROTC training at the University of Nevada, graduating in 1968. He served in the U.S. Army from 1969 to 1971. He went to Fort Eustis, VA for Transportation School and then to Fort Ord, CA and the Combat Development Command, where he spent a lot of time at Camp Hunter-Liggett near King City. When he received his orders to deploy to Vietnam, Lt. Gash volunteered to go to Jungle School in Panama to prepare for his assignment. After arriving at Cam Ranh Bay, he was assigned to the 379th Truck Company of the 4th Transportation Command at Long Binh. Lt. Gash led convoys (usually through Saigon to bases south near the Mekong River) and supplied trailers to help close out the 1st Cavalry base at Song Be (where he experienced many instances of shelling or mortar fire). After his tour, Lt. Gash was awarded the Bronze Star and the Army Commendation Medal.
