Scope and Contents
The collection consists of two essays related to the history of musicians and songwriting during the Vietnam War, a history of the 174th Assault Helicopter Company in Vietnam, and a reel-to-reel tape recording of music by The Merry Men, a musical group comprised of soldiers from the 173rd Assault Helicopter Company. The materials are dated 1967, 1997, 2009, and 2016.
Biographical / Historical
Marty Heuer served two tours in Vietnam. In 1966-1967, Heuer served as a helicopter pilot with the 174th Assault Helicopter Company and the 14th Combat Aviation Battalion at Lane Army Heliport located 12 miles west of Qui Nhon at Phu Tai. He then returned in 1970 to command the 341st Aviation Detachment (Divisional) co-located with the 25th Infantry Division at Cu Chi and then served with Headquarters, 165th Combat Aviation Group at Long Binh as the adjutant. As a singer and guitar player, Heuer joined with fellow helicopter pilots Chinch Wollerton, Scat McNatt, and Jack Westlake to form the musical group The High Priced Help.
