The collection consists of slides documenting Vance Fisher's military service in Vietnam as a helicopter pilot with the 335th Assault Helicopter Company (October 1968 to October 1969). The materials are dated 1969.Biographical / Historical
Captain Vance Fisher was born on 27 January 1945, in Durham, North Carolina. He was in the ROTC (Reserve Officers’ Training Corps) at North Carolina State University; when he graduated in 1967 he was commissioned as a second lieutenant. He served with the U.S. Army for 6 years with one tour in Vietnam (October 1968-October 1969).While in Vietnam he was Assistant Platoon Commander, 2nd Platoon (Combat Aviation Unit). He was stationed at Phu Hiep (near Tuy Hoa Airforce Base) from October 1968 to December 1968 and then at Bearcat (near Saigon), January 1969 to October 1969. During his service in Southeast Asia, he was promoted from the 1st Lieutenant to Captain on 10 October 1969.
He received the following awards for service in Vietnam: Air Medal, Army Commendation Medal, NDSM (National Defense Service Medal), Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Bronze Star. In South Korea, he received the Armed Forces Expedition Medal and Korea Defense Medal.
During his military service he was assigned to the following units:
• Vietnam - 335th Assault Helicopter Company, October 1968 to October 1969;
• Fort Wolters – Staff position at Primary Helicopter School, October 1969 to March 1972;
• Taegu, South Korea – 3rd Aviation Detachment, March 1972 to October 1972;
• Uijeongbu, South Korea – I Corps ROK/US Group, November 1972 to June 1973.
Captain Fisher was discharged on October 1, 1973. After his military service, he worked as an insurance claims adjuster for 30 years, and as a service writer at the Honda Body Shop for 5 years.
