Scope and Contents

Less than a quarter of a linear foot of manuscript material regarding the Battle of Ia Drang in November 1965, donated by Colonel John D. Herren, who was the captain of Bravo Company, 1st 7th Cavalry at the battle. The material includes a debrief and sketches and 2nd platoon's actions, a diagram of Lieutenant Joe Maram's actions, a write up of B company's actions used for General Hal Moore and Joe Galloway's book 'We Were Soldiers Once and Young,' his comments on the book, a write up in support of the Medal of Honor for Captain Ed Freeman, a 16 September, 1991 letter to Lieutenant Colonel Grant McCombs regarding the actions of Lieutenant Hank Herrick, the platoon leader of 2nd Platoon who was killed in that action, a 31 October, 2002 letter in support of Lieutenant General Hal Moore's nomination as a Distinguished Graduate Award at West Point, answers to Colonel H.R. McMaster's questions concerning Lieutenant Colonel Hal Moore's leadership qualities, and the after action report of the Ia Drang Valley Operation, 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry on 14 - 17 November, 1965.
