Scope and Contents

The collection consists of less than a quarter of a linear foot of photographs documenting Charles "Charlie" Edward Lowe's U.S. Navy service as a supply corps officer aboard the USS Jenkins as part of Destroyer Flotilla 5, 7th Fleet operating in the Gulf of Tonkin. Subjects include resupply at Subic Bay, Philippines and R&R trips to Cebu City, Philippines and Hong Kong. The materials are dated 1968-1971.

Biographical / Historical

Charles Edward Lowe attended Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island from April to August 1967. He then attended Navy Supply Corps School in Athens, Georgia from August 1967 to March 1968. He married Julee Lowe (nee Clark) in March 1968 and shortly thereafter reported for duty aboard the USS Jenkins at Pearl Harbor. He served aboard the USS Jenkins as part of Destroyer Flotilla 5, 7th Fleet operating in the Gulf of Tonkin. He also spent time in Subic Bay, Philippines during resupply missions, as well as Hong Kong during Christmas R&R in 1968. Lowe was the last officer to leave the USS Jenkins before the ship was decommissioned. He then worked in the supply department at Naval Air Station Point Mugu until June 1971.
