Scope and Contents
The collection consists of approximately 19 linear feet of materials documenting Specialist James Fitzpatrick's U.S. Army service as a combat photographer with the 69th Signal Battalion (based at Camp Gaylor, Tan Son Nhut Air Base) from 1967-1969. The materials include photographs; slides; an ID card; photo albums; articles and clippings; personal recollections; artifacts; award citations; certificates and diplomas; captured Viet Cong documents (notes, diagrams/schematics); military orders; memos and correspondence; essays and writings; moving images; and booklets. Also included are correspondence and accompanying enclosures sent and received by Specialist Fitzpatrick during his time in Vietnam, as well as notebooks containing various writings by Specialist Fitzpatrick while in Vietnam including spiritual and philosophical writings, essays, poems, theology course notes, short stories, and verses.
Biographical / Historical
Specialist James F. Fitzpatrick was born in Philadelphia, PA in 1948. He volunteered for the U.S. Army in 1966. He served for two years as a combat photographer - first with the Photo Section of the 69th Signal Battalion, 1st Signal Brigade (1967-1968 ; Camp Gaylor, Tan Son Nhut AB, Saigon) and then with the 221st Signal Company (Long Binh), 160th Signal Group, USARPAC. He was involved in several operations: OP Cedar Falls, OP Junction City I and II, OP Big Springs, OP Francis Marion, OP Reno, OP Akron, OP Hood River, OP Cook, OP Ainslie, OP Diamondhead, and OP Kole Kole, as well as the 1968 Tet Offensive in Saigon, Cholon, and Tan Son Nhut. He received numerous awards including the Good Conduct Medal and the Bronze Star. He was honorably discharged from active duty in 1969 but continued to serve in the U.S. Army Reserve until 1972.

After his military service, Fitzpatrick attended Glen Fishback School of Photography in Sacramento, CA along with fellow combat photographer C.K. Pollard, Jr. After spending a couple of years in monastic life, he worked a wide range of jobs including art gallery proprietor, newspaper humor columnist, and documentary producer. In 1975, he married his first wife and had a son. In 2004, he married his second wife and moved from California back to Pennsylvania.
