Scope and Contents
The collection consists of approximately 6 linear feet of materials documenting Captain George Henry Engel's U.S. Army service as a medic with the 25th Infantry Division and MILPHAP Team 23 (MACV Advisory Team 36) in Qui Nhon and Pleiku from 1969-1971. The materials include artifacts; photographs and images; manuals, handbooks, guides, booklets, and pamphlets (medical, Vietnamese language instruction, weapon/equipment identification); audio; business cards; ID cards; memos and correspondence; inspector general requests; military orders; service records; award citations and certificates; books; Vietnamese documents; periodicals; articles/clippings; war trophy registration and export forms; maps; an oversize Christmas card; and ephemera.Biographical / Historical
Dr. George Henry Engel, M.D. (U.S. Army Captain) was born in Chicago, IL on March 14, 1942. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1969. He served two tours in Vietnam (1969-1971) as a medic with the 25th Infantry Division. He served at Qui Nhon POW Camp attached to B Company, 25th Medical Battalion, 44th Medical Brigade and at Pleiku with MILPHAP Team 23 (MACV Advisory Team 36). He received numerous awards including the Army Commendation Medal and the Bronze Star. He was honorably discharged at the rank of Captain in 1971.After his military service, Dr. Engel completed medical residency at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, IL. He enjoyed a career managing a private medical practice of dermatologic and cosmetic surgery, lectured around the world, and taught surgery at Cook County Hospital. He died on March 24, 2021.
