Scope and Contents
The collection consists of approximately 3.5 linear feet of materials pertaining to Michael Putzel's coverage of the Vietnam War for The Associated Press from 1969 to 1972, as well as research material for his various works including The Price They Paid: Enduring Wounds of War (2015); Rogue Soldier: One Man’s War (2021); articles for Vietnam magazine; a chapter for War and Moral Injury: A Reader (2018); and the English-language manuscript of “Losing Henri,” a memorial written for Henri Huet: J'etais Photographe de Guerre (2006). The materials include notebooks; maps and diagrams; moving images; articles, clippings, and excerpts; academic papers; writings (including drafts/notes); daily staff journals; situation, spot, and trip reports; intelligence summaries; after action reports; operational reports lessons learned; officer efficiency reports; expense reports; memos and correspondence; flyers and pamphlets; meeting itineraries; photographs and images; witness statements; periodicals; newsletters; audio; award citations, certificates, recommendations, and narratives; letters of appreciation/commendation; telcon and interview transcripts/notes/questions; service records; obituaries; biographical data; artifacts; mailing lists; personal recollections; casualty records/KIA data; congressional records; website printouts; unit histories; press kits; archival finding aids; meeting minutes/transcripts; memos of conversation; book proposals; research notes; flight records; and ephemera. Subjects include Lam Son 719 (including the downing of a South Vietnamese Huey helicopter carrying combat photographers); Operation Ranch Hand and the use of Agent Orange; C Troop, 2nd Squadron, 17th Cavalry Regiment (Condors); and Major James T. Newman (C Troop Commander). Also included are materials used in the book Lost Over Laos by Richard Pyle and Horst Faas. The materials are dated predominately 1965-1975 and 1986-2020.
