Scope and Contents

The collection consists of approximately a quarter of a linear foot of materials documenting SP5 George Janakas' U.S. Army service as a microwave equipment repair specialist with the 207th Signal Company (Tropo) in Thailand from 1967-1968. The materials include letters home from SP5 Janakas to his parents (Sarantos and Agnes Janakas) and his sister (Elaine Janakas), photographs, clippings, a pocket calendar, a USAF pamphlet, and a Ft. Monmouth paperweight.

Biographical / Historical

SP5 George S. Janakas was born October 3, 1945 in Cambridge, MA. In July 1966, he left Lynn, MA for basic training at Ft. Dix. In September 1966, he began Signal Corps training at Ft. Monmouth. He finished his training in April 1967 and deployed for Thailand. He served as a microwave equipment repair specialist stationed at Nakhon Phanom Royal Thai Air Force Base in Thailand from 1967-1968.

After being honorably discharged from the U.S. Army, SP5 Janakas attended community college. He was then hired by the U.S. Postal Service, where he worked for 33 years. SP5 Janakas died April 26, 2022.
