Scope and Contents
The collection consists of approximately 5.25 linear feet of slides documenting Lieutenant Colonel Russell Clark's U.S. Army service as S1 and Battery B Commander with 7/13 Field Artillery (1968-1969) and as Field Artillery Advisor and Province S3 Advisor (1971-1972) in Vietnam.Biographical / Historical
Lieutenant Colonel Russell Clark served 22 years in the U.S. Army. From 1950-1953, he served with the Chief Radio Repair Section, 192nd Field Artillery Battalion, 43rd Infantry Division in Germany. He served with the North Carolina National Guard from 1954-1956 and then again in 1959, serving as a Recon Sergeant with the 1/113 Field Artillery. He then attended Field Artillery Officer Candidate School at Ft. Sill, OK in 1961, where he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant and was then assigned as a Forward Observer with 1/113 Field Artillery. From 1963-1966, he served as Executive Officer of A Battery, 1/113 Field Artillery. In 1967, he volunteered to be recalled for active duty and was assigned as Instructor and Operations Officer in the Target Acquisition Department of the Field Artillery School at Ft. Sill. From 1968-1969, he served a tour of duty in Vietnam assigned as S1 of 7/13 Field Artillery (February-September 1968) and then Commander of B Battery, 7/13 Field Artillery. From 1969-1971, he served as Commander of 1st MSL Detachment Special Ammunition Suppport Command and Advisor to the 159th Rocket Battalion in Germany. In 1971, he attended ARVN Advisor School at Ft. Bragg, NC and then returned for a 2nd tour of Vietnam, where he was assigned as Field Artillery Advisor and Province S3 Advisor. He was released from active duty in 1972 and reentered the North Carolina National Guard, where he was assigned as G3 for the Headquarters of the 30th Infantry Division. From 1973-1974, he served on Full Time Training Duty as Assistant State Recruiting Officer. From 1973-1975, he worked as Aide-de-Camp to the Governor. In 1975, he attended Command and General Staff College. From 1975-1979, he served with XVIII Airborne Corps at Ft. Bragg. He was then assigned to the 1st Infantry Division at Ft. Riley, KS. From 1982-1983, he served with Headquarters of U.S. Army Forces Command. Clark retired from the U.S. Army at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel on 31 August 1983. He received numerous awards over the course of his military career, including the Bronze Star, the Vietnamese Service Medal (with seven campaign stars), the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, the Vietnamese Staff Service Medal, and the Parachutist Badge.After his military service, LTC Clark worked as a civilian at the U.S. Second Army Training Specialist Reserve Component in Forest Park, GA from 1985-1994, when he retired as GS-11 on disability. LTC Clark passed away on 15 February 1996.
