Scope and Contents
Approximately 6.5 linear feet of materials documenting Colonel Larry Sloan's U.S. Army service as a Cobra helicopter pilot with D Troop, 1st Squadron, 1st Cavalry Division in the I Corps of Vietnam from July 1971 to July 1972. The materials include photographs, slides, and electronic media containing photograph/slide scans and a combat diary.
Biographical / Historical
Colonel Larry R. Sloan is from Fremont, Ohio and attended Florida State University. He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant of Infantry for the United States Army in 1969. Sloan served in Vietnam from 1971 to 1972 with D Troop 1st Squadron, 1st Cavalry Division flying Cobra Helicopters. He transferred to a newly established Army Aviation Branch in 1982. Colonel Sloan’s command assignments include the 5th Infantry Detachment, Ft. Rucker, AL; Headquarters Company 10th Aviation Battalion, Ft. Lewis, WA; C Company, 158 Aviation Battalion, Task Force 160, Ft. Campbell, KY, 226th Attack Helicopter Battalion, 101st Airborne Division, Ft. Rucker, AL. His principal staff assignments include The Army Staff (War Plans), The Pentagon; The Joint Staff (War Plans), The Pentagon; Office of the Secretary of Defense (Special Operations/Low Intensity Conflict), The Pentagon; Operations Directorate, Eighth Army Headquarters Korea; and Director, Legislative Affairs U.S. Special Operations Command, The Pentagon.

He participated in the initial helicopter assault during Operation Urgent Fury in Grenada in 1983 while assigned to Task Force 160. He is a graduate of the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas and Army War College at Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania. He received various decorations including the Legion of Merit, Purple Heart for wounds sustained in Grenada, and Air Medal. He is a Master Army Aviator with more than 2000 flight hours and has earned the Parachutist badge, the Ranger tab, the Pathfinder badge, and the Air Assault badge. Colonel Sloan retired after 26 years from the United States Army and now resides in Clarksville, VA.
