Scope and Contents
The collection consists of approximately 17 linear feet of materials documenting Staff Sergeant Norman Elmer Johnson's U.S. Army service as a combat engineer and aircraft mechanic with the 544th Transportation Detachment (Hangar Rats), the 114th Assault Helicopter Company (Knights of the Air), and the 8th Engineer Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division in Japan and Vietnam. The materials include slides, photographs, artifacts, and scrapbooks. The materials are dated predominately 1963-1969.
Biographical / Historical
Staff Sergeant Norman Elmer Johnson was born in 1943 in Chicago, IL. He served as a combat engineer and aircraft mechanic with the 544th Transportation Detachment (Hangar Rats), the 114th Assault Helicopter Company (Knights of the Air), and the 8th Engineer Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division in Japan and Vietnam. He retired from active duty in May 1985. After his military service, he worked as a correctional officer for Pinellas County, FL.
