Scope and Contents
The collection consists of slides documenting Captain Ann Catherine Cunningham's U.S. Army service as a nurse with the 44th Medical Brigade and 68th Medical Group stationed at the 12th Evacuation Hospital, the 18th Surgical Hospital, and the 36th Evacuation Hospital in Vietnam. The materials are dated 1966-1970.
Biographical / Historical
Captain Ann Catherine Cunningham was born June 23, 1944. Two weeks after basic training, she was sent to Vietnam and served as an Army nurse from 1966-1970. During her two tours she served in places such as Vung Tau, Chu Chi, Quang Tri, and Camp Evans. During her years of service, she was awarded the Vietnam Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, and the Bronze Star. After leaving the Army, she moved to Sacramento, CA and worked as an operating room nurse. In 1986, she became a strong proponent and fundraiser for the Vietnam Women's Memorial Project. She moved to Afton, VA in 1997 and worked in the operating room and ambulatory surgery unit at the University of Virginia Medical Center. She retired from the university in 2006. She died September 2, 2007.
