Scope and Contents

The collection consists of less than a quarter of a linear foot of materials documenting 1st Lieutenant Paul Dillon's U.S. Army service working in air traffic control with the 165th Aviation Group, 1st Aviation Brigade stationed at Long Binh from April 1970 to April 1971. The materials include a map; technical air traffic control operation memos; meeting minutes and letters of agreement on technical air traffic control operating procedures between the U.S. Army and the Vietnamese Civil Aviation Authority; and reports.

Biographical / Historical

1st Lieutenant Paul A. Dillon was born in 1945 in Chicago, IL. He graduated from the Army ROTC program at John Carroll University in University Heights, OH in 1967, delaying his entry into active duty until 1969 to attend graduate school. He attended both the U.S. Army Transportation School (Transportation Officers Basic Course) and the U.S. Army Aviation Center and School in 1969 before being assigned to the 165th Aviation Group, 1st Aviation Brigade in Vietnam. He was stationed at Long Binh from April 1970 to April 1971, where he supervised U.S. Army air traffic control operations throughout South Vietnam and related countries in Southeast Asia. He negotiated airspace agreements with the Vietnamese government. This required coordinating air traffic control operations with other branches of the U.S. Armed Forces operating in the country. He received numerous awards for his service including the Army Commendation Medal and the Bronze Star (Oak Leaf Cluster). He was honorably discharged from active duty in 1971 at the rank of 1st Lieutenant. After his military service, he worked as a management consultant and taught university courses on veterans' issues.
