Scope and Contents
The collection consists of one letter written by Specialist 4 Jakey Harold Hancock to his mother during his service as a radio telephone operator with the 501st Infantry, 101st Airborne Division in Vietnam.
Biographical / Historical
Specialist 4 Jakey Harold Hancock was born October 8, 1949 in Bledsoe County, TN. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1969. He served as a radio telephone operator (RTO) with the 501st Infantry, 101st Airborne Division and operated in Dong Hoi and Phu Bai, as well as near the Laotian border. He was involved in Operation Dewey Canyon II. He was honorably discharged from active duty on May 2, 1971 at the rank of Specialist 4. After his military service, he worked for Ryder as a mechanic. He died July 1, 2009.
