Scope and Contents
The collection consists of approximately 8.5 linear feet of materials documenting Officer Candidate School (OCS) at Fort Knox during the Vietnam era accumulated by 1st Lieutenant Douglas Burmester from various OCS attendees including Captain Danny Leifel, Major John Moore, Hugh Preacher, and Charles Titus. The materials include OCS class rosters and graduation programs; photographs and images; army regulations; training materials (program manuals, curricula, class schedules, coursework, class statistics); articles and clippings; certificates; casualty lists; award citations; newspapers; artifacts; audio records; flyers and pamphlets; electronic media; books; and scrapbooks. The materials are dated predominately 1966-1968 and 1996-2025.
Biographical / Historical
1st Lieutenant Douglas D. Burmester was born in 1944 in Sterling, CO. He volunteered for the U.S. Army in 1966. He completed Basic Combat Training at Fort Knox, KY (February-April 1967), Advanced Individual Training at Fort Lewis, WA (April-June 1967), and Armor Officer Candidate School at Fort Knox, KY (July-December 1967). He served as a Tank Company Platoon Leader, a Tank Company Executive Officer, a Company Commander, a Battalion Liaison Officer, and an S-4 Support Group Supply Officer stationed at Fort Carson, CO from 1968-1969. He was released from active duty in 1969 and was honorably discharged in 1972. After his military service, he worked in the consumer finance industry, the commercial banking industry, and higher education.
