Scope and Contents

The collection consists of slides documenting Louis A. Wiesner's U.S. State Department's foreign service in Vietnam (1967-1970) as U.S. disaster relief coordinator and as a regional refugee chief.

Biographical / Historical

Louis A. Wiesner (? - 20 September 2002) was born in Port Huron, Michigan and was educated at the University of Michigan and Harvard University. During World War II, he worked at the Council on Foreign Relations and then with the Office of Strategic Services before joining the State Department. His foreign service included three years in Vietnam (1967-1970) as U.S. disaster relief coordinator and then as a regional refugee chief. He retired from the State Department in 1975 and joined the International Rescue Committee, serving as founder and director of their medical program division until 1984. In 1988 he published “Victims and Survivors: Displaced Persons and Other War Victims in Viet-Nam, 1954-75” (Greenwood Press).
