Scope and Contents
The collection consists of less than a quarter of a linear foot of materials documenting the history of MACV Airborne Advisory Team 162 and the Society of the Vietnamese Airborne (Red Hats) accumulated by Colonel Michael Flynn. The materials include the society's articles of incorporation and bylaws; newsletters; articles and clippings; after action reports; unit histories; poetry; certificates; and electronic media. The materials are dated predominately 1963-2018.
Biographical / Historical
Colonel Michael J. Flynn was born 31 March 1941 in Portchester, New York. He was commissioned as a U.S. Army officer upon graduation from college on 9 June 1963. He served as a Tactical Intelligence Officer with the 525th Military Intelligence Group in Saigon (December 1967 - March 1968); as Assistant S3 with the Military Intelligence Battalion (Test), 1st Infantry Division in Lai Khe (March-August 1968); as Commander of Headquarters Company, Military Intelligence Battalion (Test), 1st Infantry Division in Lai Khe (August-October 1968); as Chief of Interrogation, 1st Infantry Division in Lai Khe (October-December 1968); as Executive Officer of Special Security Detachment, USMACTHAI in Bangkok, Thailand (January 1970 - June 1972); as G2 Advisor with Airborne Division Advisory Team 162, ARVN Airborne Division at LZ Sally, Thua Thien Province (June 1972 - February 1973); and as J3 Operations Officer and Senior Briefer with U.S. Support Activities Group in Nakhon Phanom, Thailand (February-June 1973). He participated in Counteroffensive Phase III (1 June 1967 - 29 January 1968), Tet Counteroffensive (30 January - 1 April 1968), Counteroffensive Phase IV (2 April - 30 June 1968), Counteroffensive Phase V (July - November 1968), Counteroffensive Phase VI (2 November 1968 - 22 February 1969), and the Cease Fire of 30 March 1972 - 28 January 1973. He received numerous awards including the Bronze Star with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, the Air Medal, the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, the Vietnam Civic Action Honor Medal, and the Vietnam Civic Action Unit Citation. He retired from active duty on 30 June 1993. After his military service, he worked as a law firm administrator from 1995-2005.
