Scope and Contents
The collection consists of approximately one linear foot of materials documenting William Doolittle's U.S. Navy service with Armored Troop Carrier T-91-8, River Assault Squadron 9, River Division 91, Mobile Riverine Force Task Force 117 stationed at Dong Tam from September 1967 to October 1968. The materials include photographs; service records; certificates; award citations; memos and correspondence; a safe conduct pass; artifacts; flyers and pamphlets; articles and clippings; and moving images. The materials are dated 1967-1973 and 1982-1988.Biographical / Historical
Quarter Master 3rd Class William Emery Doolittle III was born in 1947 in Meriden, CT. He was drafted into the U.S. Navy Reserves in 1966. He served as a radioman, quartermaster, and coxswain with Armored Troop Carrier T-91-8, River Assault Squadron 9, River Division 91, Mobile Riverine Force Task Force 117 stationed at Dong Tam from September 1967 to October 1968. He experienced the Tet Offensive of 1968. He received a Purple Heart and the Navy Commendation Medal. He was honorably discharged in 1972. After his military service, he earned a PhD and became a professor of Geography at the University of Texas Austin.- 1
