Scope and Contents
Bill Carpenter's memoirs and three CDs of photographs document his service with Company A, 1st Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Air Cavalry Division in 1967-1968. The three CDs in the collection contain photographs of the LRRPs of the 1st Cavalry Division in Vietnam (January - April 1967); LRRP teams preparing for missions; David Ives, the first LRRP KIA; and Lurp the Wonder Dog, the only member of LRRP to serve the entire time the unit was in Vietnam. The collection also includes articles and personal narratives from US Army Rangers/LRRPs, poems, and newsletters accumulated by William Carpenter. These materials are dated 2016-2019 or are otherwise undated.
Biographical / Historical
Bill Carpenter served with Company A, 1st Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Air Cavalry Division in 1967-1968. While in Vietnam, he volunteered for one of the Long Range Reconnaissance Patrols (LRRP) attached to the Division.
