Biographical / Historical
The destroyer class USS Frank E. Evans was participating in Operation Sea Spirit joint exercises with Australia, Great Britain and New Zealand ships in the South China Sea. Early on the morning of 3 June 1969, the Australian aircraft carrier Melbourne ran over the destroyer USS Frank E. Evans mid-ship and broke the ship in two. The front section immediately sank but Australians immediately set about rescuing survivors and were able to secure the stern of the USS Evans to the side of the Melbourne. 74 Americans died.
