Scope and Contents
The collection consists of approximately 4 linear feet of materials documenting Sgt. Glenn Sheathelm's U.S. Army service as an artilleryman with 2nd/19th Artillery and D Company, 1st Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division (Jumping Mustangs) in Vietnam. The materials include moving images; maps; slides; photographs and images; writings; operational reports lessons learned; articles and clippings; rosters; daily staff journals; personal narratives; histories; correspondence; letters of commendation; service records; artifacts; KIA lists; flyers and pamphlets; academic papers; fact sheets; certificates; sketches; and newsletters. The materials are dated predominately 1963-2019.
Biographical / Historical
Glenn H. Sheathelm was born March 1946 in Muskegon, MI and graduated from Muskegon High School in 1964. He attended Michigan Tech for a year and became a Ski Patrolman and a Senior Level Patroller in March 1965. He joined the U.S. Army in May 1965, signing up for Airborne Artillery. He was assigned to C/2/34th Artillery in Nuremberg, Germany from October 1965 - September 1966 working with a 155mm SP gun crew and studying battery reconnaissance. From September - November 1966, he served with 2nd Enlisted Student Battery at Ft. Sill. In November 1966, he went to Vietnam with HQ/2nd/19th Artillery, 1st Cavalry Division as Assistant S-2 NCO stationed at LZ Pony and LZ English. He started the 2nd/19th Artillery village sick call while at LZ Pony, which later became a battalion project.

He then agreed to extend his tour if he was assigned as a Reconnaissance Sergeant with 1st/8th Cavalry. From November 1967 - February 1968, he was assigned to D/1/8th Cavalry as Artillery Reconnaissance Sergeant. He worked in the Bong Song Plain, An Lao Valley, Gay Guip Mountains, and west of Quang Tri. He received numerous awards including the Air Medal and the Bronze Star. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in February 1968.

After his miltary service, he attended Western Michigan University and completed BS and MA degrees. He then worked at Muskegon Public Schools for 33 years as an elementary teacher and later a library and media services director.
