Scope and Contents

This collection consists of a hand-written letter sent to the American embassy in Saigon after a failed coup attempt in February 1965. The authors of the letter request transport to a neutral country in order to avoid bloodshed.

Biographical / Historical

U. Alexis Johnson was the deputy ambassador at the American embassy in Saigon in the mid 1960s. During his time at the embassy there were several coups and attempted coups in Saigon. Johnson wrote of the coups in his autobiography, The Right Hand of Power.
