Scope and Contents

This collection consists of two sets of 114 CD-Roms containing PDF document files from the US Marine Corps Oral History and Museum Division. The first set of CD-Roms contains .pdf versions of the documents, which are available online. The second set contains .tiff images imbedded within a searchable Alchemy database system. The first 108 discs include the .pdf Index for all of the documents on discs 001-108 (i.e., Index-original). Discs 109-114 were completed later, and are not included on the this original index.

The majority of these documents are monthly Command Chronologies at the battalion or unit level, which are a periodic detailed report of significant events. If supplementary/supporting materials were inclued, there may also be other document types, such as Operation After Action Reports, Operation Orders, Operation Plans, incoming-outgoing messages, unit Journals (S-1 Personnel, S-2 Intelligence, S-3 Operations, S-4 Supply, S-5 Civic Action/Civil Affairs), Situation Reports, Intelligence Summary Reports, Flight After Action Reports, etc. These documents provide information about daily unit activities, locations, significant incidents, casualties, awards, medical, supporting unit activities, etc.

While these documents were specifically created by and for the use of the USMC, they also include references to other branches and allied units which were supported by or supporting the USMC, including U.S. Navy, U.S. Army, U.S. Air Force, Republic of Viet Nam Armed Forces (RVNAF, ARVN, VNMC, VNAF, VNN), Republic of Korea Marine Corps (ROKMC), Australian units, etc. There are also references to activities and interactions with local individuals, villages/hamlets, community development and rebuilding, and population resettlement.
