Scope and Contents

The collection consists of research materials accumulated by James G. Zumwalt for his book Bare Feet, Iron Will and for a research project funded by the Cantigny First Division Foundation examining the North Vietnamese and Viet Cong (National Liberation Front) perspectives in engagements with the 1st Infantry Division (Big Red One) and the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment (Blackhorse Regiment) between 1965-1972. The materials include memos and correspondence; project proposals; reference materials; budgets and invoices; notes; operational histories; photographs and images; articles and clippings; question lists; interview transcripts; and after action reports. Items of note in this material include audio tape recordings of interviews that James Zumwalt conducted with North Vietnamese Army and Viet Cong (National Liberation Front) veterans of the Vietnam War. Also included are various other writings by James Zumwalt or his father Admiral Elmo R. Zumwalt, Jr., as well as other individuals' writings sent to James Zumwalt for his feedback. The materials are dated 1965-1968, 1972, 1979, 1986-2004, and 2010-2012.
