Scope and Contents
An unpublished autobiography documents Carolyn Hisako Tanaka's life before, during, and after the Vietnam War. The first couple of pages of her autobiography talk about Tanaka family tree. Chapter 1, 'Life in Guadalupe' begins by talking about Tanaka's Grandfather and his coming to America by way of Guadalupe, Mexico. Chapter 2, 'Internment' examines her family's time in an internment camp during WWII. Chapter 3, 'Edison High and Nursing School' talks about high school and Tanaka's decision to pursue nursing as a vocation. Chapter 4, 'Emergency Room Nursing' discusses Tanaka's experiences as an ER nurse. Chapter 5, 'Travels with Ann' explores Tanaka's decision to move to New York, and her travel experiences with her close friend Ann. Chapter 6, 'Army Nurse Corps' talks about her career as an Army Nurse in Vietnam, Chapter 7, 'Letters from Nam' talks about the letters that she sent back home, while Chapter 8, 'Head Nurse Talks' recollects her position as Head Nurse in Vietnam. Chapter 9, 'Life after Nam' discusses her Life after Vietnam, while Chapter 10, 'Nursing Administration' discusses her career as ER supervisor and other jobs she held in nursing administration after the war. Chapter 11, 'Vietnam Women's Memorial' details her involvement with this organization. Chapter 12, 'Volunteerism' talks her experiences as a volunteer. Chapter 13, 'Miracles Happen' discusses some of the memorable events in her life. Chapter 14, 'Writing Since Vietnam' shows samples of some of Tanaka's writings.
Biographical / Historical
Carolyn Hisako Tanaka was a volunteer with the U.S. Army Nurse Corps and served at 24th Evacuation hospital in Vietnam from February 1967 to August 1968. She held the position of Hospital Supervisor and later Head Nurse; she received the Bronze Star for her service in Vietnam.
