Scope and Contents

The collection consists of approximately a quarter of a linear foot of materials documenting James Pollock's U.S. Army service as a combat artist with Combat Artist Team IV from August-December 1967. The materials include art print panels, an essay, an article, an artist statement, a presentation (first given at the Library of Congress on July 15, 2003) titled United States Army Vietnam Combat Art Program, and an oral history interview. The materials are dated predominately 2003-2009 or are otherwise undated.

Biographical / Historical

James Pollock was born in 1943 in South Dakota. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1966. In 1967, while working as a postal clerk at Camp Ames in South Korea, he applied for assignment to the U.S. Army Vietnam Combat Artist Program. He served as a combat artist with Combat Artist Team IV from August-December 1967. After discharge from military service, he continued to develop his career as an artist.
