Biographical / Historical
Janice Josephine Carney was born (as John Joseph Carney) in Cambridge, Massachusetts and enlisted in the US Army in 1969. After training at Fort Dix, New Jersey, Fort Sam Houston, Texas and Fort Polk, Louisiana, Janice arrived in Vietnam in July 1970. She was originally assigned to the 666th Transportation Corps near Phu Bai, but moved to the 39th Transportation Battalion, becoming the battalion mail clerk and courier. She participated in Lam Son 719 and spent time at FSB Vandergrift. Janice returned from Vietnam in 1971 and remained in the Reserves and National Guard for several years. She is active in the Transgender American Veterans Association.
