Scope and Contents
Photographs of Vietnamese, artifacts captured from North Vietnamese soldiers, the original diaries of Dr. Dang Thuy Tram, CD-ROMs of scanned copies of the diaries and their English translations by Robert Whitehurst and published copies of the diaries in Vietnamese document Dr. Frederic Whitehurst's service in Vietnam with the 5th Battalion, 46th Infantry, 198th Brigade, 23rd Division and the life of Dr. Dang Thuy Tram, a North Vietnamese medical doctor who served in the Duc Pho District of Quang Ngai Province from 1967 to 1970.
Biographical / Historical
Frederic Whitehurst was born on 22 November 1947 in Newport, Rhode Island. In 1968, he volunteered for the United States Army and served for a total of three and a half years in the military, three years of which was served in Southeast Asia. Ranked first as a Private First Class (PFC), Whitehurst was promoted eventually to a Specialist 5 and served as an Infantry Mortar-man and a Prisoner of War Interrogator. He served with the 5th Battalion, 46th Infantry, 23rd Division from March 1969 through September 1969 and then with the 635th Military Intelligence Detachment from September 1969 through April 1972. During this time, Whitehurst was stationed in Quang Tin, Dong Ha (DMZ), Quang Ngai, and Danang. When he was discharged in 1972, he had received four Bronze Stars, the Combat Infantryman Badge, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal with three clusters. He then received his Bachelors of Science degree in Chemistry in 1974 and his PhD in Chemistry in 1980, followed by two years in post doctorate research. From 1982 through 1998, Whitehurst was an FBI Agent and received a law degree in 1996. In 1998, he became a Forensic Consultant and in 2003, he became a practicing lawyer.
