Biographical / Historical

Billy Hopper was born in 1928 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. He volunteered for the U.S. Coast Guard in 1946 beginning 30 years of military service. During the Vietnam War Hopper served as a Chief Warrant Officer and was stationed in Saigon. For his service in the U.S. Coast Guard Hopper was awarded the Navy Achievement Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with 2 bronze stars, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal with 1960 device. Hopper retired from the U.S. Coast Guard in 1976 at the rank of Chief Warrant Officer W4. After his military service Hopper worked for the Exxon corporation for 6 years.
