Slides, military documents, and The Salina (Kansas) Journal Sunflower (March 23, 1980) document Steele's experiences serving in Vietnam with 7th Battalion, 13th Artillery from March 1969 - April 1970.Biographical / Historical
Lynn Steele was born in Kansas City, Kansas on 16 November 1944. In September 1968 he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served a total of two years, including one tour in Vietnam. He arrived in Vietnam on 13 March 1969 and served with 7th Battalion 13th Artillery, first with C Battery from March through September 1969 and then with B Battery from October 1969 through April 1970. He was Specialist 4 Fire Direction Control Mapper, mathematically plotting the course of shells fired from the field pieces. While in Vietnam, he was stationed north of Qui Nhon at two different fire bases.He returned from Vietnam and was discharged on 27 April 27 1970 with the following awards and citations: National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and Vietnam Commendation Medal and the Marksmanship badges for the M14 and Expert M16. Steele is a life member of both the Vietnam Veterans of America and of the Disabled American Veterans. After his service, Steele worked with the Quality Control unit of the Kansas State Social Services for thirty years, until his retirement in 2000. He has participated in the Oral History program at the Vietnam Archive.
