2002 DDG-16 Reunion, San Diego, CA Boat People Official Navy Report Date: July 15, 1980 Strauss received orders to proceed to rescue. PV 3 aircraft had spotted a stranded boat. Date: July 18, 1980 Approached crippled fishing boat. Commenced rescue of 43 survivors. One infant subsequently perished. Refugees were in good shape. Despite drifting for 55 days. Taken to Subic Bay Naval Base. Turned over to the United Nations. We maintain contact with 3 of the teenagers that were rescued. They and their spouses attended out 2002 reunion in San Diego. Of the 120 people in attendance, there wasn't a dry eye. Shelley Ngoc-Giang McElheny, Electrical Eng. at Lockhead Aircraft, Sunnyvale, CA Huey Nguyenhuu, Prof. of Mathematics at UC, San Jose Rich Nguyenhuu, I don't remember.
