This is a series of photos taken by Mike from the back seat of the O-1. Peter Bernstein is flying and directing the strikes. The fighters are Vietnamese A-1s. The target area is a distinct bend in a river south of Tan An called 'The Testicles.' It was a major rendezvous point for FACs and fighters because it was so easy to find. Any decent map will display it. The target was a series of abandoned villages, and the primary ordnance was napalm. This was most likely Mike's first flight in Long An Privince which was a combination area orientation and strike mission. The poor quality of the photos is largely due to smoke obscuring the target area.

An O-1 at the FAC's primitive parking area adjacent to the Tan An Airstrip which was a wide spot in a road, 2,100 feet long, some short distance outside Tan An. The camouflage scheme was someones 'harebrained' idea of how to protect the O-1 from air attack while on the ground. There was not air threat! Worse, the camouflage made the FAC invisible to the fighters who always saw the FAC form above and against the background of the jungle. The dayglo panels on the wings were to help the fighters see the FAC against the pattern of the ground. Fortunately, this concept lasted only a very short while and the paint scheme was changed back to the more familiar light blue-gray.
