Carleton Currie Reel 4 - Plane Guard
Moving Image Item Number: 1391VI1612
Box Notes: "1. USS Oriskany w/ San Clemente Island in the background. We chased them, staying 1 mile astern, for 10 days. 2. This is the kind of jet they were flying over us every 2-3 mins. day and night. Something went wrong w/ this approach, the pilot aborted and took back off. They had 2 crashes while we were with them. One pilot landed too close to the edge and wound up w/ his plane hanging by the tail hook and the nose in the water. The second man tried to abort a landing, didn't have enough power, and splashed in the ocean. Both accidents happened near midnight. Luckily, the only injury was one broken arm - and six million dollars worth of airplane lost. It was hard to hold the camera still as we had a 50mph wind across the deck. 3. This is the daily helicopter that took off our mail (but never brought any.) We were making all of the black smoke. Don't usually make that much but something was wrong with the boilers that day. 4. Yours Truly - standing on the Signal Bridge. 5. Another jet."
