The 1,000,000 R&R story guy with the black beret shopping for his wife when she meets him in Hawaii. Only one problem, after spending two weeks with this guy and knowing he has an all expense paid trip for both he and his wife, he gets a Dear John letter. Boy was the army PO'd [pissed off] when this happened to this poor SOB, plus all the work we had done was down the drain.

Audio Letter from SP5 Joliff to home

At the time of this letter Mr. Joliff was serving in Korea as a cinematographer, but he was scheduled to go back to Vietnam in fifty days. He tells them that he is sending home two grandfather clocks, one for them and one for Alice. He has decided contrary to his last letter that he will not be extending his tour for another year. He tells about the lack of activity there and some of the designing he is doing. He asks questions about people and activities that are happening at home, including details about work, and mentions letters he received discussing current events. He comments on the speed of the mail system in Korea and Vietnam. Mr. Joliff mentions an acceptance letter to a Syracuse University and discusses his plans after his release from the service. He then switches back to talking about Korea and discussing shopping and the recreational activities available to he and others in the service. He mentions people at home that he has not heard from that he would like to. He also tells them he has received a couple of speeding tickets, but nothing has happened yet. The recording ends abruptly.

229 October 1970 Subject: Off Duty Recreation, The Craft Shop Location: Fort Shafter, Hawaii A recording done Specialist 4 Joliff in conjunction with a camera and another sound recording. Recording is of sounds in the off-duty craft shop at Fort Shafter. Off-Duty Recreation- Ft. Shafter, Hawaii Craft Shop. Wild track sound recorded by Sp. 4 Jolliff, 1970. I was doing a film on what a soldier does in his or her off hours- I do not have any of the film from this project. I was sent to Korea and a second tour to Nam so this project was abandoned. Mr. Joliff begins by detailing the specifics for whom the recording was done and in conjunction with and the numbers to identify the recording. This recording fades in and out frequently. There is varying background music and the noise of people talking and giving instructions. There are also some identifiable and unidentifiable noises of craft-work being done. The recording ends with a repetition of the identifying information.
