3 August 1969. Box Bridge defensive position, located approx. 11 km NE of Saigon. A member of Hq. Sec., 'B' Troop, 1/17th Cav, 82nd Abn. Div. sits next to a 'Think Safety' sign, an ironic notion considering this is a war zone. This was one of a series of photos I shot with my own camera while on assignment to document the uses of barbed wire tape in the field. It was my first attempt at capturing life in the field for the soldier, rather than the Army's desire to see how the equipment worked. Photo SP5 Bryan K. Grigsby (DASPO)

3 August 1969 Box Bridge defensive position located approx. 11 km NE of Saigon. A soldier from 'B' Troop, Hq Section, 1/17th Cav., 82nd Abn. Div. gets a shave at a 'portable' barber shop runby a Vietnamese barber. Chances are good this barber or his colleague in the background worked for the Viet Cong as spies. This photo is part of a series I shot that dy using my own camera to depict a soldiers life in the field, rather than the militar'ys interest in how the equipment worked. Photo by SP5 Bryan K. 3 August 1969 Box Bridge defensive position, approx. 11 km N.E. of Saigon. A soldier with Hq. Sec., 'B' Troop, 1/17th Cav., 82nd Abn. Division shares a moment with a dog that was his pet. Often dogs were the only native Vietnamese that U.S. soldiers actually made friends with while in-country. This photo is part of a series of images I recorded that day with my own camera. The military was often more interested with pictures of how the gear worked. I was there that day to document the use of barbed tape at a defensive position. Photo by SP5 Bryan K. Grigsby

3 August 1969. Box Bridge defensive position approx. 11 km N.E. of Saigon. A very young looking soldier with Hq, Sec., 'B' Troop, 1/17th Cav., 82nd Abn Div. sleeps after pulling all night guard duty. This photo is part of a series of images I shot with my own camera... recording soldier life in the field rather than how equipment worked... which is the 'official' reason I was there that day... to document the use of barbed tape as a defensive tool... which made for some really dull photographs.
