Color film of the movement of the 11th Brigade from Hawaii to Vietnam aboard the U.S. Naval Ship General William Weigel (T-AP-119). Footage shows the troopson deck doing calisthenics, playing cards, reading, standing at the railing, etc, while the officers were lounging in deck chairs the officer's area. Copy of the original caption sheets can be found in the archival collection.

'100 feet of footage that I (Chuck Abbott) filed on board the US Naval Ship General William Weigel (T-AP-119). On December 7, 1967 Wendel Garet and I were covering the movement of the 11th Brigade from Schofield Barracks, Hawaii to Vietnam. I had hope to film some additional footage for my own collection, but was very busy covering the activities of the Army and Navy personnel aboard ship. We had the run of the ship and it was quite an experience. The footage shows the troops exercising, playing cards, reading, etc and the Officers lunging in the Officer's area.

Training on the Aurican/Sound On Film camera
Moving Image Item Number: 1390VI1649
[Number of Pages: 0]
Color film of training on the Aurican/Sound On Film camera at the U.S. Army Photo School at Ft Monmouth, NJ. People shown in footage include Rich Folden, Gassner, and Dan Farbstein. This 100ft of film was taken by Richard Folden. Rich was a US Army Instructor at the Army's Photo School, Ft. Monmouth, NJ. We were training on the Aurican Sound on Film Camera, each taking turns at the microphone. Rich filmed us with his Bolex 16mm, and was a great instructor (I am the one with the mustache). I am interviewing Gassner, and Dan Farbstein is interviewing me. Rich had given me this footage and after Ft. Monmouth, I wondered what had become of him. He left the Army and spent time in NYC. The few times that I went to NYC with him (Ft. Monmout was about 2 hrs away) he hung around some film students, assisting and learning the craft. I have tracked down a number of the guys from Ft. Monmouth, but no one recalls hearing anything about Rich. This footage was filmed between Nov 1966-April 1967.

Time off while in Vietnam
Moving Image Item Number: 1390VI1650
[Number of Pages: 0]
Color film of Jerry Hains, Ron Deluerier and Chuck Abbott in Vietnam experimenting with anamorphic/scope lens. Part A: This 100 ft roll of film was filmed at the Villa in Vietnam. Jerry Hains, Ron Deluerier (Frenchy - in picture), and I were using the 16mm lense (anamorphic/scope) to see if it would work by holding it up against a regular lens. Also, if holding it in place, and then rotating, what effect would we get. We thought it would make for a special effect for someone who had a few too many drinks...As Frenchy demonstrates in our Hollywood epic. It turned out quit unique for a few guys, finding something to do on our off time. Also see Reel can marked #38A.
