Half a linear foot of one VHS tape, documents and correspondence detail Lieutenant General John Cushman's service as advisor to the ARVN (Army of the Republic of Vietnam) 21st Infantry Division, 1963-64. The date range of the materials are 1963-1990s and include information on the Viet Cong, pacification plans developed by Cushman in respect to the 21st Infantry Division, his deposition for the Westmoreland vs. CBS case, and his personal memoir.

The collection consists of approximately one linear foot of museum objects, documents, maps, periodicals, newspapers, a photo and a DVD documenting Loren Hall's service in Vietnam as a helicopter pilot from 1967-1969 and again from 1970-1971. He served with the 134th Assault Helicopter Company (1967-1968); the 48th Assault Helicopter Company and 1st Aviation Brigade (1968-1969); C Company, 101st Aviation Battalion, 101st Division (1970-1971); and the 2nd Aviation Brigade, 101st Airborne Division (1971).

The museum objects include a duffle bag, a set of fatigues, and several unit patches, pins, and ribbons. The documents include personal military service documents; guides to Vietnam; R&R information packets for Japan and Sidney, Australia; Warrant Officer Candidate Student Guide; Fort Wolters Helicopter School guide; and United States Army Aviation welcome packet.

The Vietnam Helicopter Pilots Association (VHPA), is a non-profit war veterans organization filed under Section 501(c)(19) of the Internal Revenue Service and is dedicated to enhancing and accrediting the cohesiveness, esprit de corps, and traditions of valor of rotary wing aircrews that flew in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam Era. Currently, the VHPA has a membership of over 9,400 helicopter pilots from around the world. It has a web site located at: http://www.vhpa.org. The material is divided into the following series: Unit Histories and Related Information - This series contains information on unit involvement in Vietnam, including ORLL, After Action Reports, Individual Recollection of Units, and other types of Unit History and information. It is organized by the official Order of Battle for the United States Armed Forces, a list of which immediately follows this introduction. Operations - This series contains information on operations but does not specifically mention the units involved. Command Progress Reports - This series depicts in statistical form the measurement taken of mission accomplishment against programmed mission objectives at a specific point in time and includes various non-combat components involved with the helicopter pilots. Lam Son 719 - This series contains information on Operation Lam Son 719, the January 30, 1971 to April 6, 1971 operation to disrupt North Vietnamese supply lines as well as destroy their base areas in Laos. Historical Reference Directory - This series contains copies of the VHPA Historical Reference Directory Membership Directory - This series contains copies of the VHPA Membership Directory United States Primary Helicopter School - This series contains information on the United States Primary Helicopter School at Fort Wolters, Texas. The bulk of this series is training guides and manuals used at the school to train pilots. United States Army Aviation School - This series contains information on the United States Army Aviation School at Fort Rucker, Alabama and Fort Stewart, Georgia. The bulk of this series is training guides and manuals used at the school to train pilots. Manuals - This series contains manuals generated by the United States Armed Forces. General Files - This series contains information of a general nature and is further divided by subject. VHPA Newsletter - This series contains copies of the VHPA newsletter. Other Newsletters - This series contains copies of newsletter generated by other organizations and units related to helicopter pilots whom served in Vietnam. Fact Sheets - This series contains copies of the fact sheet papers distributed during the Vietnam War. Periodicals - This series contains periodicals donated by members of the Vietnam Helicopter Pilots Association. Printed Material - This series contains articles, or parts of books, copied by members of the VHPA and is further divided by subject. Separation Sheet - This list indicates material that has been placed in other collection in order to ensure archival preservation standards. Books will be catalogued and available on the Texas Tech University Library computer catalogue (www.lib.ttu.edu). Photographs are placed in archival photograph sleeves and under the VHPA series of the Vietnam Archive Photograph Collection. James C. Smith Collection (2825) Finding Aid

Approximately 2.5 linear feet of moving images, audio material, documents, and a book collected by Major General James C. Smith. The audio recordings include music performances from the 1st Cavalry Division band, lectures on leadership given by Lieutenant General Zais, press briefings, and other programs. The videos include commercial films about the Vietnam War and home movies on Super 8mm and 16mm film. The home videos include footage from all three of Smith's tours of duty in Vietnam and date from 1966 through 1970. The footage includes change of command and awards ceremonies, footage of bases and landing zones (LZs), and the unit activities of the 1st Cavalry Division and the 101st Airborne Division. Of interest is one film showing footage of firebase Brick, Arsenal, Birmingham, Bastogne, and Ripcord from June 1970. Included with the film is a typed analysis of each firebase's defenses with suggestions on how to improve security. The documents and books talk about helicopter unit operations. The materials in this collection date from 1962 through 2000.

This collection consists of 24 recorded letters from Dale Fillmore to his family during his two tours in Vietnam, 1967-1968 (Co. B, 229th Battalion (Assault Helicopter)) and 1970-1971 (242nd Aviation Company). The collection also contains approximately 1.5 linear feet of slides and letters home donated by Dale Fillmore. The letters were written during Fillmore's army basic training at Fort Polk, Primary Helicopter School at Fort Wolters, Advanced Helicopter School at Fort Rucker, and his two tours in Vietnam (1967-1968 and 1970-1971). The materials are dated 1966-1971.

Approximately 11 linear feet of documents, photographs, slides, newsletters, newspapers, periodicals, museum objects, and microfiche donated to the archive by Mike Law and other members of the Vietnam Helicopter Pilots Association (VHPA). The collection is arranged into three series of materials. First is official VHPA business papers, including correspondence, executive council meeting minutes, membership reports, and reunion planning materials. The second series of materials is incoming correspondence from individual members. This correspondence contains personal narratives about individual members' service in Vietnam, and in many cases includes copies of historical documents from each member’s own unit and/or their research such as reports (e.g. after action, operational-lessons learned, combat damage analysis); directories; event programs; unit histories (e.g. 18th Corps Aviation Company “Green Delta” (1971-1973); rosters; flight school materials; articles and clippings; artifacts; photographs; slides; calling cards; DOD certificates of vaccination; helicopter flight test guides; synthetic flight training system information/operation guides; instrument procedure guides; helicopter regulation questions; selective service notices of classification; military orders; certificates; and firsthand accounts. The third series is additional material accumulated by Mike Law from his involvment in VHPA business or materials sourced from VHPA members. These materials include a recording of Joe Galloway speaking at the 2000 VHPA reunion; emails containing the text of Galloway’s remarks; crests given to the VHPA by Australian Helicopter Pilots; service records; obituaries; flyers and pamphlets; maps; moving images; yearbooks; books; research materials for the 1994 VHPA membership Directory; and a booklet detailing insignia items of the 192nd Assault Helicopter Company (1966-1972). The materials are dated 1954-2022.



The collection also includes training materials donated to the archive by William J. Fitzgerald. The training materials are booklets from the United States Army Primary Helicopter School at Fort Wolters, Texas.
